The Mill was recently honoured with two awards at The Advanced Imaging Society’s 9th annual Technology Lumiere Awards, the annual ceremony acknowledges and celebrates technologies and processes demonstrating both innovation and impact in advancing the future of the entertainment and media industries.
Boo Wong, The Mill's Group Director of Emerging Technology, was recognized as an industry innovator, receiving the Distinguished Leadership Award alongside seven leading women in tech, which were selected by a special awards committee for having had an "impact using innovation”. Additionally, two organizations, ‘Women Talk Tech’ and ‘Women in XR Fund’, were awarded for fostering the growth of technology professionals.
This year’s ceremony also honoured 15 technologies and their developers, including The Mill for the Mill Mascot real-time animation system; Apple, for its ProRes Raw codec; IBM Watson computer incorporating AI; DreamWorks Animation, for VDM data structure system; NVIDIA, for its GeForce RTX graphics cards; Google VR; Cisco, for its broadcast production virtualization system; and Felix and Paul, for its dynamic projection workflow for stereoscopic 360-degree live video.
Mill Mascot is a product that combines real-time animation and game engine technology with motion sensors; enabling a digital puppeteer to control animated characters through hand gestures. This gives directors, creatives and clients the ability to ‘direct’ CG character performance live and make creative decisions on the fly and allows for quick-turnaround of animated social media content, as well as live performance and episodic entertainment.
