Mill+ creative director Carl Addy recently returned from the Regie Lounge Directors Showcase held in Goya in Berlin, which showcases directing talent on a big screen to an audience of advertising agency and production company folk as well as fellow directors. The event is hosted by BBDO Germany’s Head of TV Steffen Gentis, who interviews each director, whilst a reel of their best work is shown to over 1,000 creative and influential decision makers from all over Germany and across Europe.
The directors featured this month were Florian Anders, Martin Schmid, Freddy Fischer, Kay Kienzler, Karina Taira, Philipp Stölzl, Torbjörn Martin, Mikko Lehtinen, William Armstrong and of course, our very own Carl Addy.
Carl gives us this round up of his Directors Lounge experience…
It was the first time I’d ever been to the Directors Lounge and I was incredibly impressed with how well supported it was, it really seemed to attract a breadth of industry types.
We’ve been spending quite a bit of time in Germany recently, in Berlin in particular, and I think my work made its way through to BBDO, which is where Steffen saw it and in turn asked me to showcase my reel.
I was delighted to be invited, but the next challenge was choosing which work to feature… I tried to show a broad range of work from Google Chrome “Jamal Edwards” through to the We Are Shining "Wheel" music promo. Most importantly, I knew there would be so much good work shown on the night, that I wanted to make sure ours stood out.
The experience of having my reel featured in the showcase was a great opportunity, as it’s not very often that you’re able to see a body of your work get such an immediate reaction. Steffen is quite a formidable chap, with a distinctive interviewing style, and he kept me on my toes, asking some interesting questions.
Of course after the showcase the event descended into a huge party, I really don’t know how Berlin’s ad industry functioned the following day! It was a great experience to share my work and be able to talk about Mill+ to that audience, and having an excuse to go to Berlin is always great as its just a fantastic city – a big thank you to Steffen and the Directors Lounge team.
