AT&T blurs the lines between entertainment and reality in the latest spot 'Space Capsule' for AT&T's new Uverse app. Creating a spaceship's dramatic decent to earth and tying it to a humdrum train ride was the result of the creative team-up of The Mill, BBDO and MJZ director Steve Aysun.
To push the tension between the two scenes, the space craft was shot with an anamorphic film lens for a cinematic look, while the train platform was shot with a regular lens. The Mill team then married the environments together seamlessly, showing how the Uverse app truly draws in the viewer and brings TV drama to everyday life.
From the impeccable set design to the sparks of plasma as the spacecraft enters the atmosphere, every detail was finessed until perfect. Creating the speed and urgency of the first shot of the space capsule hurtling towards a crash landing was key to instantly set up the tone of the commercial.
2D lead artist Iwan Zwarts explains: "We chose images captured by the Hubble space telescope, and added live-action elements of lens flares and atmosphere to enhance the re-entry sequence. This scene is great example of what every VFX artist wants to create at least once in their career!"
