Christian’s approach was to shoot as much footage in-camera as possible, palpably capturing the easy-going, California surfer vibe.
The intent was to convey the organic beauty of Baja and apply minimal effects. Other than adding a few lens flares in 2D, artists at The Mill stayed true to the raw footage to bring forward the rugged landscapes. Ultimately, this helped deliver a more natural aesthetic.
Head of Colour in the Chicago studio, Luke Morrison says of the experience, “It was really fun bringing the spirit of Baja alive. Christian shot some stunning footage and we wanted to keep a clean, warm feeling with the colour grade, all the while giving the piece some texture. The underwater footage was simply breathtaking, so I worked to sculpt the image and give it a sense of depth, really accentuating the light filtering through the surface of the water."
