Outsider's Pedro Romhanyi brings even more festive Cheer to DFS' winter sale with this fair ground inspired ad. Lead 2D Artist Zoe Cassey Hayes comments, "The ferris wheel shots were previs'd in 3D so we had a visual idea of the composition of the shot and we could calculate where the camera had to be and at what angle in the studio for when we shot the sofa plates.
It allowed us to plan how we would shoot our sofa plates i.e. what height the sofa had to be at and the distance the camera had to travel vertically to achieve the parallax we needed in order to comp them in to the shot seamlessly.
The time lapse plates of the Blackpool ferris wheel were shot at varying shutter speeds so we could control how it the shot ramped up and down in speed during the edit. The sofa plates were shot on black in a studio and we mimicked the lighting as best we could and added wind to help us make the comp more believable.
CG signs were made which were composited in flame on to the wheel along with the sofas. A small life size section of the wheel was built for the closeups. It included all the festoons, rigged sofas and could swing up and down replicating the motion of the real one. The team managed the project by piecing together the many different versions before the VFX shots were fed out and composited in Flame."
