Summary
Comedy Central’s “Mid Ultimate” and “Divided”, featuring the network’s late-night favorites Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, are the first in a series of spots directed by Steve Miller and featuring graphics and VFX from The Mill NY. Promoting Comedy Central’s longstanding “Indecision” mid-term election coverage, the satirical comedic spots are set in a contemporary war room reminiscent of the archetype from Dr. Strangelove. We worked directly with Comedy Central to create a bustling and frenetic backdrop, adding another edge to Stewart and Colbert’s already sharply honed commentary.
"The goal was to make it look techy," explains Gavin Wellsman,
our co-head of 2D. "We talked about holograms, flickering and
buzzing around the live screens." All the screens and background
elements were shot on green screen using a RED camera. Graphics
were added, then integrated with the background elements and the
blue light that filters into the room.
Gene Nazarov, Lead Designer on the project, developed the spots'
graphics-maps of the U.S., with text references, icons and motion
to reflect developing trends. He says it was a smooth process
working with Comedy Central because their great ideas and pipeline
paved the way for delivering the cool contemporary look of the
spots.
