After their inspired ‘choreographed treadmills’ promo for Here it Goes Again went viral, the four-man band OK Go worked with quirky and clever music-promo director James Frost and Syyn Labs to create a marvellous ‘Rube Goldberg’ machine to sync in time with their song This Too Shall Pass.
Two of OK Go's 'ten commandments' required that the machine's
domino-effect, running over two floors of a 10,000 sq ft warehouse,
should be filmed in one shot with 'no magic'. It took 85 takes but
they did it.
The Mill, renowned of course for doing magic, added some VFX
touches to help synergise the knock-on effect of the miscellaneous
objects tumbling, rolling and flying in perfect sync with the
rhythm of the music. Lead vocalist Damian Kulash and the band
members, dressed as foremen throughout, kept their usual cool right
to the last paint-splattering line-up.
