Bringing the storm to life: behind the Emmy-nominated ocean sequence of Costa Da Morte

The Mill is proud to celebrate the Emmy nomination of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon – Season 3 in the category of Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards.

The nomination recognizes the incredible collaborative work behind Episode 1, “Costa Da Morte”, including the ambitious ocean sequence led by Mathieu Legros, VFX Supervisor at The Mill.

Set against the unforgiving backdrop of a post-apocalyptic journey at sea, the sequence challenged the team to create a vast and immersive ocean environment — from turbulent waters and towering waves to dramatic skies and storm conditions — while maintaining the raw, cinematic intensity of the series.

Crafting a digital ocean

The sequence was filmed with the actors surrounded by blue screens, requiring the VFX team to extend the practical elements into a fully realized digital environment. The artists combined live-action photography with CG simulations, compositing and environmental work to transform the footage into a dangerous open-sea journey.

The team created more than 60 VFX shots, including complex water and wave simulations developed in Houdini, alongside digital skies, clouds and storm elements designed to heighten both the scale and emotion of the scene.

Beyond the technical challenges, the sequence was driven by a shared creative ambition: to make the audience feel the power and unpredictability of the ocean, while keeping the characters’ struggle at the heart of the story.

Visual effects are always the result of collective creativity, and this Emmy nomination celebrates the dedication of every artist, supervisor and collaborator who contributed to bringing Costa Da Morte to life.
