With more than 25 years in the film industry, Nikolas D’Andrade is a French VFX Supervisor whose work spans film, television, and advertising, including Academy Award- and BAFTA-winning productions. His career sits at the crossroads of VFX supervision, cinematography, photography, optics, and lighting, giving him a distinctly image-driven approach to visual effects.

A long-standing member of the Film & Series teams through the evolution from Mikros Image to MPC Paris and now The Mill, Nikolas has worked on projects including John Wick: Chapter 4, Anatomy of a Fall, Mandy, and By the Grace of God. Most recently, he co-supervised the visual effects for Cold Storage (2026).

In this interview, he reflects on more than two decades of evolving tools and workflows, the importance of developing a visual eye, and how experience, culture, and curiosity continue to shape the way he approaches every image.

You have 20+ years of experience in VFX, from television to film to advertising. What has changed the most in the way you approach an image over all these years?

Hard to say, because taking an objective look at yourself is always complicated. But to try anyway, I would say it is the way I decipher what the client has in mind. Over the years, you develop certain reflexes that allow you to grasp their intention more quickly, including what they imagine without being able to put it into words.

On the pure “image” aspect, it is much the same: reflexes that adjust according to the context of the story the director wants to tell. And general knowledge plays an important role in this process — it is often what allows you to provide a starting point for a discussion or an artistic direction.

Your background sits at the crossroads of VFX, photography, lighting, and optics. How does this visual culture influence your work today as a VFX Supervisor?

I think it mainly gives me a reference as well as a memory. I have even sometimes surprised myself during photo shoots, seeing a detail, an aberration, or an illusion, and thinking to myself, “this is a detail that could bring an extra touch.”

In VFX, everything is possible, at least technically, obviously depending on the budget — and that is precisely the trap: when nothing resists, there are no longer any guardrails. Photography, on the other hand, forces me to make decisions at the moment of capture — the light, the optics, the framing, you have to make a choice, you cannot fix it afterward. That constraint eventually shapes an eye, and it is this eye that I try to bring as much as possible into visual effects.

Concretely, it makes communication easier: when I talk with a cinematographer, we speak the same language: photography: what a lens actually does wide open, how a light source behaves depending on its distance, what the sensor or film actually retains in the highlights, rather than talking to them about subsurface scattering, HDR, or any other abstract term coming out of digital imaging software.

You have worked on projects as different as Anatomy of a Fall, John Wick: Chapter 4, and Cold Storage. How do you adapt your approach when VFX sometimes need to be completely invisible and, at other times, become a spectacular component of the film?

The budget is already a determining factor: it sets the framework before we even talk about the image. Then comes what I was saying earlier: the context of the film: are we dealing with something intimate, a comedy, or a big action spectacle?

In other words, if I had had to create an explosion in a film like Anatomy of a Fall, I wouldn’t have put the same punch into it as on Cold Storage. That is the first thing I try to gauge during my first discussions with the director, because the answer determines everything else.

That is also why I consider my presence on set essential. A lot of things are not said during the preparation meetings. I often happen to catch a conversation between the director and the actors, or with the cinematographer, or someone else, and these are continuous clues. They tell me where the film’s attention really lies, and therefore how far the effects should make themselves noticed or, on the contrary, disappear.

Ultimately, the adaptation is not about the technique: it is about the degree of presence the effect should have in the shot. Invisible or spectacular, it is the same requirement: it is about serving the intention, not doubling it.

At what point in a project can a VFX Supervisor really bring creative value: from the writing and pre-production, on set, or mainly in post-production?

Throughout the entire project, with essentially a large part taking place in pre-production. Getting involved in the writing is a little more delicate, but in a specific case, if there is a problem with a certain scene because it is too expensive, then the VFX Supervisor on the project can potentially suggest alternatives.

On a shoot, what details do you pay particular attention to — lighting, lenses, camera movement, materials, environment — because you know they will be decisive several months later in post-production?

The pure technical data collection is more the role of the data wrangler who accompanies me: documenting the lens package, focal length, type of equipment, capturing textures and environment references. Everything that needs to be documented precisely so that we can match it several months later, in post. That frees me up to observe and stay close to the direction.

You have witnessed many changes in the industry. What has transformed the job of a VFX Supervisor the most, and what, on the contrary, has not changed?

Indeed, a lot of things have changed. From a technical point of view: software stability, rendering times, the tools available, such as Houdini and its whole range of procedural generation tools, or FX such as water and volumetric effects.

On the other hand, even though rendering times have gone down, resolutions have exploded. To put things into perspective: when I started, I was rendering images at 720 × 576 (PAL); today it is often 4096 × 2160 (DCI 4K), which is 21 times more pixels. So yes, rendering engines calculate faster, but they have much more to calculate.

What has not changed is the essential part. A shot works or it doesn’t. The viewer does not see the pipeline, they see an image that is right or wrong. The job is still based on these same principles. That said, audiences have become much more critical and demanding, because their relationship with images has changed as well. In the 90s, when we watched a film like Twister, the tornadoes probably seemed photorealistic. Today, that no longer holds up.

The tools are evolving very quickly: in your opinion, which skills will become even more important for a VFX Supervisor in the coming years?

Experience, first. Then culture in the broadest sense — art, film history, science, literature — and constant technological monitoring. That is what allows you to quickly decide which path to take, and above all which one to avoid: dead ends that always end up costing you, both in quality and in budget.

After more than 25 years in the industry, what still surprises you or makes you curious when you start a new project? :)

It is the research phase, before pre-production, that always fuels my curiosity. On a film that was about Vesuvius, for example, I would go through everything I could find in order to be as accurate as possible. Being naturally curious and every project being different, the two fit together perfectly.
