Last week Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy S23 Ultra in seven humorous films. The films were directed by Los Pérez out of Caviar, concepted by Wieden + Kennedy while VFX was provided by our international roster of artists and experts. All seven spots were also graded by London based colourists Peter Oppersdorff and Philip Hambi.
Check out all seven of the films and insights from the team below.
“In November last year, we were put to the task to execute seven films for Samsung’s next big campaign to launch their new flagship phones. Working together with director Los Pérez and with our close collaboration with Wieden+Kennedy Amsterdam, we knew this would be an exciting journey. Los Pérez have their distinctive look through the camera lens with their vibrant & beautifully art directed cinematic style. We knew from the start this would be a fun project to dive into. We closely worked together with our team in Seoul, Amsterdam, Bangalore, London, and Paris studio. It was a great pleasure putting all these forces of talented minds together, this is where all creativeness shines. It felt like a non-stop moving train reaching the destination on time while siting in first class. Our structure is very robust, the workflow was seamless when collaborating between our studios around the globe. ”
To highlight the graphic quality of its new smartphone, Samsung invited in its campaign the Esport star Faker known for his talents on the game League of Legends. Faker’s images were shot in Seoul and then passed on to our Parisian experts to be integrated into the final production. A full CG plane, content integration on smartphones screens, compositing and matte painting, all the ingredients are gathered to give life to this story.
“Organisation, coordination, artistic harmonisation... the latest Samsung campaign was an opportunity to demonstrate the great cohesion between The Mill Studios worldwide. Our team was involved in the Previz Technique to meet the creative challenge of the directors' camera movements. The permanent exchanges between our teams and Carsten Keller, ECD in London allowed us to define and validate the technical and artistic approach of the films. Our Parisian studio handled the production of the Epic Performance film, a specific sequence involving two shoots supervised by The Mill Seoul. The talent of our Lead Team - Damien Canameras, Marouan El Bekri and Stephanie Mollet - combined with the teams in Amsterdam, Bangalore, London and Seoul allowed us to deliver a creative campaign that showcases Samsung's technological innovations”
“Every project is unique and this one is even more so as we collaborated with The Mill Studios in Amsterdam, London, Seoul and Bangalore. We handled the entire Epic Performance film featuring Esport star Faker. The footage of Faker was shot in South Korea under the supervision of The Mill team in Seoul. Once the images were received in Paris, Faker was reintegrated into the various shots of the film thanks to the expertise of our compositing teams. As VFX supervisor, I was in direct contact with the client but also with The Mill production teams around the world. The challenge was not in the nature of the effects to be produced but rather in the collaboration and communication process between the different studios. Everything went very well thanks to the help and expertise of Stéphanie Mollet our VFX Producer on this project. ”
