Summary
Derrick Rose Fights Matadors Chicago Bull-Style in adidas ‘The Bull’
Although NBA point guards and matadors do battle at different
stadiums, they have more in common than one might assume. And it's
the grace and brawn typically propelling their movements that
drives agency 180 LA's "The Bull" for adidas. DGA winner Stacy Wall
directs this enticingly shot and choreographed spot. It features
Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose debuting his adiZero Rose 2 shoes vs.
matadors in Madrid's famous Las Ventas bullring.
180 enlisted The Mill L.A. for Post/FX on "The Bull", which
included the 35mm film grade. Head of Telecine Adam Scott says he
worked virtually with Stacy Wall, the agency creatives Dave
[Horton] and Matt [Woodhams-Roberts] and Editor Paul Watts in
London to set the look of the film. They referenced photographs of
Jose Tomas, a legendary Spanish bullfighter, that featured imagery
strong in contrast and color.
Scott explains, "The original images are very clean as a result
of [DP] Joost Van Gelder's work and the colors are very defined and
art directed. I retained the captured information and kept the
colors separate, so the finished result is deep and contrasty
without losing any detail."
"The Bull" was filmed this summer in Madrid on one of the
hottest days of the year. Ant Walsham was on set as VFX Supervisor
and Lead 2D Artist, while 2D Artist Gareth Parr worked steadfastly
with the Mill team in L.A. to turn around 40 shots in two weeks
time.
"It was great to collaborate on a high-profile spot like this for
180 and adidas," Parr enthuses. "All the players-from Stacy to Paul
to the agency creatives Dave and Matt and producer Natasha
[Wellesley]-brought something special to the table. We're pleased
'The Bull' went over so well!"
