Generate these kinds of forces and you’ve got to know how to control them. The Mill certainly harnesses the power of its visual effects in this commercial. Made for agency CDD, it elegantly equates the superior performance of a Mercedes-Benz car with the physical perfection of superb athletes in motion.
Mill Flame artist Jason Watts and 3D animator Russell Tickner
attended shoots in Spain and Germany with director Ivan Bird of
Serious Pictures, and worked closely with CDD art director Walter
Campbell to research and develop motion waves to mimic and trace
the fluid patterns of movement of the athletes and cars.
Scenes of the athletes performing their sport or gymnastic routine
are intercut with footage of the cars giving powerfully smooth
performances in all weathers. Mill 3D's Jan Walter designed
software to create the vapour-trail traces of their movements,
which were either plotted out by hand or driven by a mathematical
equation, called a fractal.
